Double Bill @ Joe's Pub. Sofia Tosello Tango Ensemble and Pedro Giraudo Tango Quartet

  • Joe's Pub 425 Lafayette Street New York, NY, 10003 United States (map)

The Argentine-born singer Sofía Tosello has recently released Lluvia fue (Chamber Tango), an album of contemporary and historical Tango songs. Tosello’s powerful renditions, new arrangements by Latin Grammy winner Fernando Otero, will thrill tango fans while introducing new audiences to a deep and moving tradition.  Lluvia fue presents a singer in her own element, who looks forward as she looks back, mourns as she embraces the future, who captures, in short, the essence of Tango and its emotions, across the divides of time, country and language.

Lluvia fue (Chamber Tango) is Tosello’s fourth Album and one of many Jazz and Latin recordings to which she has lent her voice, which is known for its versatility and emotional range. A native of Córdoba, Argentina, she has lived in New York since 1999. Her first album, Alma y Luna (Sunnyside Records, 2009) was hailed as the beginning of “the next wave of Latin-American jazz” by Christopher Loudon in Jazz Times. She sang a tribute to the Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges on Un Instante (JS Records, 2011), a collaboration with Julio Santillán, and in 2012 she teamed with Peruvián guitarist Yuri Juárez on Tangolandó, merging the tango with the rhythms of Perú. She has performed in several Tango shows, including Recuerdo Tango and Tango Connections: A Love Story by Mariela Franganillo and Polly Ferman’s Glamour Tango, which toured internationally.

Latin Grammy nominated bassist and composer Pedro Giraudo is among the most compelling tango artists today. After two decades performing with the most important interpreters of tango, Pedro Giraudo debuted his own Tango Orchestra at Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing in July 2015 and since then has become an active cultural ambassador of this beautiful and passionate music of his native Argentina.

Among the many noteworthy events in his career, in 2014 Pedro recorded bass on Ruben Blades’ CD “Tangos”, which won a Grammy and a Latin Grammy. He is also the musical director of Tango for All’s “Blind”, Mariela Franganillo Company’s “Tango Connection” and “Tango Recuerdo,” and performed with U.S.’s most prominent tango artists including Pablo Ziegler, Hector Del Curto, Fernando Otero, and Luis Bravo’s “Forever Tango”. His own ensembles feature some of the most highly regarded virtuoso instrumentalists.

“The music portrayed in this album is a very moving, passionate, even daring statement, building a bridge between tango’s glorious past and its even brighter future.” – The New York City Record Review
